Packed-with-flavour Thai food that suits most dietary requirements

Thai catering is a brilliant option for feeding a group with a range of special dietary needs.

Aside from its winning combination of sweet, sour, spicy and savoury, so many Thai dishes are dairy-free, gluten-free and available without any animal products. Ditch the peanuts sprinkled over many items too and they’re also nut-free.

Most foods are served with white rice or stir-fried with rice noodles, both of which are free from gluten. There is, however, gluten in soy sauce, so make sure to double check you’re ordering menu items without it or that are made using a gluten-free sauce.

Authentic Thai cuisine delivered where you need it, when you need it

Australia has the fifth-largest Thai population outside of Thailand and the number of Thai restaurants here shows it. Us Aussies love a good Thai dish.

Mimi Ridthirong, the assistant manager at Mak Mak Thai, in Perth says our love of the southeast Asian cuisine could be the number of flavours in every dish. Her favourite being a classic pad Thai, is an ideal mix of sour, sweet, salty and, if you want, spicy. An “absolute perfect dish.”

It’s also a relatively quick cuisine to whip up, she notes. Perfectly suitable for rush hours and last-minute lunch orders.

We know that getting your food quickly and on-time is important. That’s why at EatFirst stand behind our caterers and offer a 100% guarantee that your food will arrive when you want it and that it will be delicious.

Find Thai Catering near me

I've been to Thailand multiple times, and other than the beautiful beaches, colourful culture and warm weather, the biggest draw for me is definitely the cuisine. So much so, that each time I go, I take a cooking class to learn more about it.

My must-have Thai foods

No trip for me is complete without sampling a few curries (green and panang being my favourites), trying the local takes on pad Thai (it's different just about everywhere you go!) and treating myself to a sweet mango with sticky rice.

If I'm in the north, khao soi is certainly a staple, while in the south I'm all about a massaman curry. While I'm not a vegetarian, if I'm hankering something fresh and packed with veggies, green mango, papaya or banana blossom salad always hits the spot.

But we're not in Thailand... how good can the Thai food be?

We're super lucky here in Australia, and the quality of Thai food from restaurants and caterers is really high. In fact, I've found it's pretty close to what you'd get if you were chowing down at a street stall in Bangkok or dining on the beach in Koh Samui.

MasterChef winner for 2017, Diana Chan, told the SMH that we're able to grow similar crops here in Australia to what you'd get in Thailand, making Australian-made Thai food fresh and affordable as we don't need to import goods. Lucky us!

Not sure what Thai food to order? Here are some popular dishes

A classic Thai catering menu has oodles of noodles, curries, stir fries and finger foods on offer. Having a dish or two from each category, with some dishes made without meat or nuts, is a great way to add a bit of variety to your meal, while appealing to a range of dietary needs.

If you need to narrow it down to just a few dishes, here are some popular options based on what people are searching for and what the team here at EatFirst love to order when we eat Thai.

  • Noodles: Pad Thai, Pad See Ew and Pad Kee Mao
  • Curries: Green, panang, massaman and red curry
  • Stir fries: Chili jam and cashew nut, Thai basil
  • Salad: Beef salad, papaya salad, larb
  • Soup: Tom Yum, Tom Kha, Laksa
  • Side dishes: Steamed rice, coconut rice, roti
  • Desserts: Mango with sticky rice
  • Drinks: Thai beer (Chang, Singha) or Thai milk tea

Thai finger foods to order for your next special event

There's plenty of demand for Thai-inspired hot finger foods, and we're not at all surprised by this. They're delicious!

If you're hosting a finger food event and want to add a bit of exotic flavour (sorry, party pies; sometimes you just don't cut it!), Thai-inspired finger foods are a great way to do it.

Some of our top picks include:

  • Spring rolls
  • Chicken or pork satay skewers
  • Fish cakes
  • Curry puffs
  • Money bags
  • Coconut prawns

Tip: Thai finger foods make great entrees to a meal or are an excellent hot finger food option in a casual setting.

Where we currently offer Thai catering

In Melbourne, we don't have any Thai caterers available at the moment, but we do have some general catering companies that serve a new Thai dishes. For example, The Common Kitchen and Bar serves Thai beef salad, satay skewers and fish cakes.

FAQs for Thai Catering

FAQs for Thai catering

Are there any delivery fees for Thai catering?

Delivery fees differ depending on the caterer. Currently, most of our Thai options do offer free or low ($20 or less) delivery!

What are the best Thai menu items to order for gluten-free diets?

Luckily, many Thai foods are already free from gluten or can be easily altered to be, including swapping regular soy sauce for a gluten-free one. Check with the caterer if a gluten-free sauce is available.

Some of these include:

  • Pad thai
  • Curries
  • Fried rice
  • Soups, including Tom Kha
  • Mango sticky rice (Don't forget dessert!)

Gluten.org is a handy resource for finding foods that are safe for coeliacs. It points out that naturally free-of-gluten Thai ingredients include: rice (and rice noodles), fish sauce, palm sugar, tamarind and shrimp paste, lemongrass and coconut milk.

The site also recommends double checking ingredients for any fried items, such as tofu, in case there is a wheat-based batter that's been added before frying or in case the fryer also cooks items that are glutenous.

What are the best Thai menu items to order for vegetarian and vegan diets?

One of the great things about Thai food is that most dishes can be made without meat or animal products.

However, watch out for eggs. It's often mixed into noodles and a stir-fry, including vegetarian options. If you need to avoid eggs, it's best to flag this when you order.

Most Thai restaurants and caterers in our Marketplace have a range of flavour options. For example, Sydney-based Red Lemon Thai has the following choices for many of the noodle and stir-try options: chicken, beef, vegetables and tofu, fish, prawn, crispy pork and mixed seafood.

What Thai food items are best for religious diets, including Halal, Hinduism and Kosher?

Just like for plant-based diets, Thai food is easy to tweak for religious diets too.

  • For halal diets, check to see if the beef, lamb or chicken being used is halal-certified and avoid any items with pork.
  • For Hindu diets, many avoid meat and eggs altogether but especially beef, as cows are considered holy.
  • For kosher diets, meats and fish should be kosher certified. Like halal diets, pork is also not consumed, along with shellfish. Milk and meat is also a no-no, but dairy is quite rate in Thai dishes that aren’t deserts. Mostly coconut milk is used to make curry and coup creamy.
